The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
