EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
