British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
