The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
